Deficiencies in Machine Safety at Smaller Workshop Companies

The Swedish Work Environment Authority has recently published a report from an inspection initiative aimed at smaller workshop companies. The purpose was to examine occupational health risks and the safety of machinery and work equipment. Unfortunately, the results reveal several recurring issues with machine safety.

During the inspections, the Work Environment Authority reviewed, among other things, machine safety, vibration-related work, lifting aids, ergonomics, as well as chemical and physical workplace hazards.

Older Machines a Common Risk Factor

A clear conclusion in the report is that many smaller workshop companies are using older machines that lack the protective features found on newer, recently CE-marked machines. As a result, the Work Environment Authority has issued prohibitions on twelve machines that were not deemed approved for use.

The deficiencies are likely not due to a lack of willingness to work safely, but rather difficulties in staying up to date with current regulations such as the Machinery Directive or the upcoming Machinery Regulation, as well as challenges related to the machines’ technical condition, documentation, risk assessments, and CE documentation.

The Importance of Structure and Up-to-Date Documentation

The report emphasizes the importance of having control over machine safety, especially when using older equipment. Regular risk assessments, accurate documentation, and clear responsibilities are essential to prevent accidents, avoid downtime, and comply with legal requirements.

For companies in the workshop industry, this serves as an important reminder to ensure that:

  • Machines are approved for use.
  • Documentation is complete and up to date.
  • Any modifications require new risk assessments.
